20 Simple (But Important) ’90s Fashion Items That Are Beyond Fierce

Ahh, the ’90s. a simple and nostalgic time, for some of us. The time of MMMBop, the Walkman, watching Friends, Boy Meets World, and the battle between Backstreet Boys and N’SYNC. And of course, we can’t forget the amazing 90’s fashion!

Some of the items that we witnessed back then should probably just stay in the ’90s. However… there were some serious trends back then that we can still bring back today and look fierce!

Tie-dye

’90s Tie Dye Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Pretty much everything was tie-dyed in the ’90s. If you couldn’t go out and buy something tie-dyed, you did it yourself. I remember doing a lot of DIY tie-dye shirts. Not that I am trying to age myself right now….

Chokers

’90s Choker Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

I was huge into chokers when I grew up. Everyone wore some kind of choker… whether you were into the thick chokers, or the plastic tattoo ones (me), or the ball chain chokers, there was a choker for every style type in the ’90s. And these are definitely back with a vengeance. And I couldn’t be happier.

Hoop earrings

’90s Hoop Earrings Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Yet another staple of ’90s fashion, hoop earrings. Everyone had some form of hoop earrings. Either small ones, or super-sized. I’m pretty sure some of them could double as a basketball hoop… These earrings are something that I think will always be around, And for good reason. It’s a classic.

Scrunchies

’90s Scrunchie Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Ahh, the scrunchie. No outfit was complete without one of these bad boys. Even if you didn’t have it in your hair, it was on your wrist. No matter your hairstyle, there was a scrunchie somewhere near. This ’90s fashion item has come back pretty big too. There are scrunchies all over the place. I even have them hanging around again. I love them!

Velvet

’90s Velvet Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

If anything were to scream 90’s fashion, it’s velvet. I distinctly remember my pair of black velvet overalls with looney toons characters on the front… just saying… I was totally in style. If you want to bring a bit of ’90s fashion to your wardrobe, don’t forget to grab something velvet. It can be anything, a dress, a shirt, a scrunchie… anything.

Bucket hats

’90s Bucket Hat Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

The bucket hat has come directly from the ’90s to the present. I actually see quite a lot of people wearing them. Maybe it has something to do with BTS? Or maybe I’m just biased. I do know they seem to wear them a lot and they can definitely pull it off. It makes me want one…

Slip dress

’90s Slip Dress Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

The slip dress was seen everywhere in the ’90s. Especially on supermodels, it seems. It was simple and fit right in with the whole minimalist style that a lot of the ’90s seemed to have. It is definitely something that can be brought back and still look amazing. Sweet and simple.

Boyfriend jeans

’90s Boyfriend Jeans Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Getting into the grungier side of 90’s fashion, we have boyfriend jeans. It’s amazing how fashion comes back around. These crazy baggy jeans were seen everywhere and then they were replaced with jeans that were basically painted on. We seem to be getting away from that again, maybe realizing that our bits need some room to breathe, and so… welcome back boyfriend jeans!! I’ve missed you.

Butterfly clips

’90s Butterfly Clip Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

No caboodle box was complete without some butterfly clips. You could either have the small plastic butterfly claw clips, or the metal butterfly clips that had flappy wings. Either way, you were seriously styling if you had these bad boys. I see these things fluttering back into style, and I am all for it! They are so nostalgic.

Mini Bags

’90s Mini Bag Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

There is nothing better than tossing a teeny tiny bag that fits absolutely nothing into your wardrobe. Maybe not entirely practical, especially with the size of our phones, but they are still cute. They add a bit of cute to your outfit.

Crop tops

’90s Crop Top Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Despite the fact that I can’t really pull off the crop top that much anymore, I still love this ’90s fashion staple. Everyone wore these, and if you wanted to look like one of the ’90s idols we had, hello Britney, then you had at least one of these in your closet. I swear I will get back to crop top form! They are so cute!

Halter tops

’90s Halter Top Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

This was another top that I probably had too many of, especially since my teens were in the 2000s. I’m glad that they are coming back though. I rocked more halter tops than I probably care to admit. Once I saw Eliza Dushku wear a bandana shirt in “The New Guy”, I fell in love with that kind of top.

Tube tops

’90s Tube Top Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

The tube top. A top in the shape of a tube. Go figure. This is something else that I wore a lot of… I just now realized that my top half was pretty uncovered in my adolescence. Granted, I grew up in Florida, so it’s very hot. That’s my excuse and I’ll stick to it. Anyway, this top was seen everywhere throughout the ’90s fashion. It wasn’t even in any one particular type of fashion. You could add it to a grunge outfit, hip hop style, or even girly. The tube top was always really versatile. Maybe that’s why it came back.

Overalls

’90s Overalls Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

This is another ’90s fashion item that I am so happy came back. Granted, I never really stopped wearing them, but it’s nice when something you like is actually “in style”. These days, they aren’t just denim, or velvet if you had similar overalls to me. I have a pair of overalls that are a sweatpants material and I am living for them. They are so comfy and so amazing for the days when I am working on the blog or making my dreamcatchers and butterfly art. I feel like a real artist in my overalls.

Flannel or tartan

’90s Flannel And Tartan Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Depending on which way you take this, you can either look super grunge or super preppy. Either way, I love it. Some days I just want to be a bit darker and moody, hello large flannel shirt. And then other days I want to be cute and preppy, just like Cher in “Clueless”. That is where the tartan mini comes in. No matter which way you take it, you can rock that ’90s fashion and totally kill it.

Combat Boots

’90s Combat Boots Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

This is another item that I feel was never really out of style, but it was definitely huge in the ’90s. You could pair these with pretty much anything, even a slip dress. Add a bit of grunge to any outfit.

Keds

’90s Keds Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

I love these simple shoes. It’s something else that can go with basically anything. I seem to like items you can pair with anything. It keeps things simple and you don’t have to buy as much. Wear these in the ’90s or today, they won’t ever go out of style.

Converse

’90s Converse Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

Boy oh boy, some of my absolute favorite shoes. I had a pair of blue converse that I wore with literally anything and everything I could. I wore them until they fell apart. And the best thing about them? They will forever be in style I’m convinced. If you don’t have some, get some.

Birkenstocks

’90s Birkenstocks Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

These shoes were everywhere in the ’90s, and I am seeing them all over again. They weren’t really my cup of tea, but so many people love them. I hear they are comfy so maybe that’s why? Maybe I’ll give them a try sometime?

Platform Shoes

’90s Platform Shoes Fashion

by Ragtagjourney

And finally, to round out our ’90s fashion that has come back around, we have the classic platform shoes. Thanks to the Spice Girls, every single girl in the ’90s had some sort of platform shoe. Either a sandal or a sneaker. We all wanted to be so much taller than we actually were. If I were to wear these now, I would be over 6 feet, so I may not add these to my own personal wardrobe these days, but anyone can rock these, and I say go for it! Spice up your life!

Save this for later!!
